“TUNASLAM CORNER”
Thursday Report-Weekend Possibilities:
For local fishing in Santa Monica, Long Beach, Catalina and San Clemente Islands. 01-14-10
The weekend weather was once again fantastic, grease seas, with large forecasted swells no problem at all, and far smaller than predicted? Bass and Sculpin fishing remain the primary targets of most anglers, throw in an occasional Halibut or Bonito, with recent weather, and a fun day on the water was norm. I spent the weekend and this Wednesday in Mexican waters, targeting the bottom critters. Weather was sensational, fishing was on the slow side, but still had plenty of fish Taco meat, and loads of fun.
Now this weekend and most of next week presents a different problem. Saturday looks like a good bet, Sunday and all week expect wind and rain. So get out there Saturday and soak up some rays, catch a few fish, for sport or for dinner, then sit back and enjoy the rain which we in California need so badly.
Islands!
Catalina
Did not hear of anymore bites on the White Seabass, of course a lot of anglers prefer not to post reports when they catch White Seabass, as it brings anglers to the area in droves. The Options did not have any luck on their last trip to the Island for these heavily pursued fish.
Private boater Bobby fished Catalina over the weekend, and found some big Bonito on the chew, with a few Calico Bass.
San Clemente Island
No Sport or Private Boats out again, that I know of.
On the local scene!
Long Beach
The ¾ day boat Enterprise out Long Beach Marina, had a great day of fishing for the Bass, as only ten anglers on Sunday 1-10-10, catching 1 Calico Bass, 93 Sand Bass, 21 Sculpin, 50 Perch.
The ½ boat Southern Cal out of Pierpoint landing has been doing very well on the Bass and Sculpin. A Sunday trip, 1-10-10, with only fifteen anglers caught 79 Sand Bass and 12 Sculpin, while yesterday, Thursday, also with only fifteen anglers caught 76 Sand Bass and 16 Sculpin. That’s over six fish per angler, not bad?

Private boater Gary on his boat “Cowboy” fished Izor’s Reef on Saturday 01-09-10 with live squid and found the bigger Sand Bass on the chew, up to 18”, with a couple of Calico Bass, Cabazon and just short or just legal Halibut to spice things up!
Private boater Raul fished the Long Beach Wall Sunday, 01-10-10 and caught a huge 22” Calico Bass, a bunch of Barred Sand Bass and some Sculpin. Good trip raul.
Private boater Lal on his boat “Rubber Ducky” with friend Ron on 01-08-10, and found the Sand Bass on the chew at the Pipe, with Ron catching a sweet 4 ¾ pound Sand Bass. Most bass released to fight another day!
Private boater Steve fished Saturday 01-09-10 also at Izors Reef, with friend Dan and caught some dandy Sand Bass, a few Calico Bass, with a colorful Cabazon the highlight of the trip, all fish released.
Santa Monica Bay/Redondo
The 3/4 day Spitfire out of Marina Del Rey, has not fished lately.
The New Del Mar 1/2 day boat fished Thursday 1-14-10, with twelve anglers catching 3 Calico Bass, 8 Sand Bass, and 60 Sculpin. they had very large crowds for their weekend fishing, which was a little slower.
Private boater Vince, with friends, fished again Saturday 1-09-10 out of Marina Del Rey, and found the bottom critters and bass were still biting. They added some lobster during the evening hooping session.
Weekend Weather Forecast!Get out this Saturday, as Sunday, and most of next week has rainy weather ahead.
